If you’re looking for an affordable staycation with plenty of watersports activities to sink your teeth into, they don’t come better than South Wales and Swansea. Here are just a few of the thrills you can get off the Welsh coast:
Surfing in the Gower
Whether you’re an experienced surfer or looking to learn how to ride a wave, the Swansea Gower has the perfect water conditions.
Just a short drive from Swansea city centre, the Gower Peninsula offers breath-taking scenery in a part of the country that was the very first UK designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty back in the 50s. Rhossili Bay in particular, has even been voted a top 10 best beach in the world by TripAdvisor!
The beaches of the Gower are popular among visiting and local watersports enthusiasts who want to hit the waves for a spot of surfing, sailing, windsurfing, water skiing or canoeing. Alternatively, the shallows allow for a gentle, leisurely swim, but be aware that there aren’t any lifeguards on duty at most Gower beaches.
For beginners, the best place to learn is at the Surf GSD Gower Surfing School. Established 15 years ago, it is now one of the best Surfing Great Britain approved educators and the only licensed surf school in the Swansea area.
Kite Ride Along the Coast
Also at the Gower you’ll find many classes to learn how to power kite, landboard or kitesurf. Soar along the golden sands or rippling waves with stunning scenery behind you thanks to plenty of wind on this open coastline.
Power along the sands at speed in a buggy or get some air off the water using a kite, whatever your interest or experience level they’re sure to cater for it.
Go on a Gower Coast Adventure
If you’d like to see a little more of South Wales’ famed coast, then make sure to book a ride with the Gower Coast Adventures crew. Gower Coast Adventures provide high-speed guided boat trips along the coast where you can spot local wildlife, as well as getting your adrenaline rush for the day.
Take a comfortable seat within the ‘Sea Serpent’, a 10m 315hp marine turbo diesel, water jet propulsion RIB, and make sure to hold on tight to your camera. From speeding along the waves to creeping into the shallows, these boat trips are a fun, family day out or a thrilling couples outing.
Indoor Fun at the LC Swansea
There’s watersport fun to be had in Swansea whatever the weather thanks to the LC. South Wales’ premier waterpark and leisure complex offers activities for all ages and abilities, all under one roof at the city’s waterfront.
Visit the LC Swansea and you’ll find Wales’ largest indoor waterpark, as well as a 30ft climbing wall, surf simulator boardrider and a number of interactive zones for children, including a 4 storey play area. And if that’s not enough, there are multi-purpose sports halls and a gym too, so plenty to keep any sports junkie occupied for days!
There are plenty of things to do in Swansea, whatever the weather, so what are you waiting for?! It may be time to book a weekend away.
If you’re looking for a modern and conveniently located hotel for a watersports break in South Wales, The Dragon Hotel in Swansea is the ideal choice!
