How Solo Travellers Deal with Loneliness

Travel tends to make us care about one thing above all others: ourselves. It sets us free from our familiar surroundings and makes us open to new possibilities. While that can be a great thing for anyone, it also means that our minds and hearts don’t have the same familiar safe zones they did when we weren’t roaming the world on a budget. When you’re getting around on your own, loneliness sets in for sure.

Of course, every traveller will deal with loneliness in different ways. Some people may be quiet and introverted in the beginning, so they just stick to the bus or train ride. Others are more sociable and are more likely to join groups to meet other travellers.

As a solo traveller, it’s your choice how you’re going to deal with it. You can either embrace loneliness or run from it. Do you want to be lonely or do you want to be happy?

Finding That Connection with Strangers

While you’re travelling with other people, try connecting with strangers. Take part in local events or explore new places. Go visit a park with a beautiful lake or enjoy a sunset over the mountains. If you’re going to meet other people, embrace the new experience and try to make new connections. Start making new friends, because when you’re happy and confident, your confidence grows. Eventually, you will meet new people in your travel groups.

One of the best ways to meet new people is to join an organised activity. Travel clubs or walking tours can also help. You can meet people and have new experiences you might have never thought of.

Relaxing in Different Cities

A lot of solo travellers set up tours and organised excursions for them to explore new places. That makes it hard to relax when you’re looking forward to exploring and getting to know new people. It also makes you feel like you’re never alone. That’s not necessarily a bad thing. After all, you’re not really alone at all. You have your phone and Wi-Fi, so you can try out new casinos and perhaps connect with fellow punters for a nice chat.

You can use those things to connect with other people when you’re in a situation where you just want to relax. Either connect to a video call or check social media. There are so many things you can do to relax. Even if you’re sitting in the middle of a mountain in India or surrounded by sunflowers in Mexico, you can relax.

You can look at photos of beautiful places you saw before, or watch videos of exciting places you went to. You can do anything that makes you happy. All you have to do is close your eyes and let go of the stress that’s bugging you, especially if you’re travelling alone.

While you are travelling, make sure you do some of the things we talked about before. Meet new people. Meet more people. Make new connections. If you don’t feel like you can do that, try to make your own connections to other people in your travel group. You can always contact them and talk with them. You just have to do it.

We get it. When you’re travelling alone, you feel lonely. But that doesn’t mean you have to deal with it forever.
